When Dave Brailsford became it’s head in 2002, British Cycling was something of a laughing stock.
We had won one Olympic Gold ever.
No Brit had ever won the Tour De France.
Six years later at the Bejing Olympics, Team GB would take 7 out of 10 gold in the track cycling.
They’d repeat this four years later at the London Olympics and have won dozens of Olympic, Paralympic and World Championships medals.
And Brits have won six out of the last seven Tours.
Much of this massive improvement has been put down to Dave Brailsford’s approach of “the aggregation of marginal gains”.
Small, 1% improvements in lots of area which add up to significant results.
Changes in things so seemingly innocuous as massage gels and pillows used.
And while the results came quickly in Olympic terms, we’re still talking a few years rather than weeks.
A degree of patience was required.
Our results are much the same.
It’s tempting to think that we’ll get the best results from huge, drastic changes.
And whilst that might be true in the very short term, it rarely is longer term for the greater and lasting results.
It’s lots of little better decisions that seem innocuous by themselves……….
But that all add up……….
That get us there.
Each little better food, drink, sleep, de-stressing and exercise choice can be those one percents that add up.
Like with cycling, the small changes might not seem sexy………….
But the results they bring are 🙂
Much love,
