Have you heard that Innuits have 100 different words for snow.

Not true.

It comes from the fact the most Innuit languages are what are called ‘agglutinative’ languages.

Meaning longer, more complex words are constructed from shorter words.

So, essentially, the Innuits say the equivalent of Snowfall, Snowdrift, Snowball, Wetsnow, Heavysnow, Lightsnow, etc.

Not different words for snow as such.

Just a different way of saying all the things about snow that we also do.

While we’re on the subject of words though……….

Here are 24 of the most commonly used ’emotion’ words in the English language, only going up to H.

Angry, Annoyed, Appalled, Apprehensive, Ashamed, Bewildered, Betrayed, Confused, Confident, Cheated, Cross, Depressed, Delighted, Disappointed, Ecstatic, Excited, Emotional, Envious, Embarrassed, Furious, Frightened, Great, Happy and Horrified.

Six positive.

18 negative.

Shows something, doesn’t it?

It’s human nature to be more negative than positive.

It’s how our brains work if we allow them.

It shows why we’re so hard on ourselves.

Why we struggle to feel as good about things we’re doing well and we feel bad about the things that aren’t so good.

To feel like we’re constantly failing at life.

But, as with all things, knowing is Step One.

It doesn’t mean we can’t have goals and work towards them.

But know, that sometimes, it won’t quite pan out how we’d like.

And that, overall, we’re doing a lot of stuff well.

Don’t beat yourself up over it.

Learn from it, sure.

Try not to keep making the same ‘mistakes’.

But understand that you’re doing well.

And keep going from there 🙂

Much love,

Jon ‘What’s the difference between snow men and snow women?’ Hall and Matt ‘Snowballs’ Nicholson
