All or nothing makes no sense

Whilst I’m talking about recent conversations I’ve had in the club (yesterday’s blog), I had a few eye opening exchanges last Wednesday.

During a session I’ll often ask questions related to what everyone’s up to.

“Did you have a nice weekend?”, “What’s everyone up to this week?” and so on.

Last Wednesday I asked the 6am session “What’s everyone most looking forward to this week?”

And I got one answer.

Ed was off camping at the weekend.

“Anyone else? There must be something you’re looking forward to?”

A few shrugs, some “not really”s and “the end of it”s.

“168 hours in the week and there’s not a single thing we’re looking forward to?”

Silence.

“10,080 minutes and every one is $h!t?”

I repeated the question in the other sessions.

And got a similar response.

Which made me sad.

Because that (at least in my opinion) isn’t how life should be.

And I think there are two things at play there.

There will be things people enjoy in the week.

But they’ve just become a bit ‘take for granted’.

Stuff that we would look forward to if we stopped to think about it.

If we stepped back for a second from the dozens of other challenges swirling around our heads.

Those things are there when we look for them.

And realising that makes a big difference to how we feel.

Every morning I write down (amongst other things) the thing I’m most looking forward to that day in my planner.

And every evening I add my three biggest wins of the day.

Takes seconds.

Legit.

And makes a big difference to how I see the day and week.

Secondly, we might benefit from a bit of ‘lifestyle design’.

Making some tactical changes to it and what we do.

Doesn’t need to be wholesale massive moves like resigning and leaving our partner (although they may be options too).

It could adding in activities we used to do but have stopped.

Protecting our time to allow some fun in it rather than letting work and social media bleed into our every waking moment.

It could just be a conscious effort, a decision, to do some things differently.

If all we look forward to in the week is “escaping it” (either by going into the next one or by “making it to the weekend” so we can sedate with our method of choice), that’s not where we want to be is it?

There’ll be things we can add in or change relatively easily that we enjoy and can look forward to.

Things we are already doing that we can chose to re-frame our view of.

But, I hope you agree, if we can’t answer the question “What are you most looking forward to this week?” we probably need to make some adjustments.
