A year or so ago Facebook introduced the ability to get recommendations.

You’ve, obviously, always been able to ask for them, but now replies automatically generate links to pages, maps, etc.

What do people always say when asking for recommendations?

Some variation of (for example);

“Best plumber in Macc?”

You ever seen anyone ask for the “3rd best plumber in Macc?”

3rd Best Plumber in Macc - Weight Loss Progress Not Perfection

No, thought not.

We generally ask for the best.

Or cheapest.

Or maybe best value.

Always the ‘most’ something or other.

We always seek the best.

The best way to get fit.

The best way to lose weight.

Why the Best Isn’t Always the Best

You could argue that the ‘best’ way to lose weight (quickest at least) would be to just stop eating.

That would do the job pretty quickly.

Not the best idea though, I’m sure we’d all agree.

10 years ago, when I was an Area Manager for the UK’s largest Personal Training company……….

The Directors tasked us with the job of creating a system our in-club PTs could use to generate business.

“We don’t want the best thing” they said. “We want something that works.”

Which, I must admit, confused me to start.

Surely the best thing would work the best.

What they meant was that they didn’t want something that would, if done correctly, would work brilliantly.

But that was likely to not be done correctly, if at all, by many of our trainers.

Something that they all could and would do, which would work pretty well, would work better.

It’s the same with our efforts to get in shape.

Weight Loss Progress Not Perfection

Aiming for the best is a nice idea.

But if we then don’t do it because we find it too much, then it’s a rubbish idea.

Daily hour-plus long workouts, strict eating plans and the like may well get optimal results.

But sub-optimal is fine.

Progress not perfection

Find a version that takes you in the right direction but that you’re happy doing forever.

Your “3rd best plumber in Macc” 😉

Much love,

Jon ‘Mate’ Hall and Matt ‘Tape’ Nicholson

P.S. Our success rate shows that we are, actually, by far and away the best at helping people in Macclesfield get in shape. But it’s rarely because we give them the ‘best’ plan to follow. Come and have a look around RISE and have a chat if you’d like to actually get results rather than just be given another list of things you struggle to do.
