Anyone ever take anti-depressants?
If my conversations with people are reflective of an average, I’d wager that a good good few hundred people who read this will have / are.
A quick google suggests nearly 1 in 5 people are currently taking them.
The most common type being what are called SSRIs.
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors.
According to NHS.uk “after carrying a message, serotonin is usually reabsorbed by the nerve cells (known as “reuptake”). SSRIs work by blocking (“inhibiting”) reuptake, meaning more serotonin is available to pass further messages between nearby nerve cells”.
Serotonin being “a hormone that helps to stabilize moods, regulate feelings of well-being and happiness, regulate anxiety, and control sleep”.
Now, I’m perfectly aware that serotonin levels aren’t relevant in everyone and that they’re not the entirety of the story in those where they are………
But…………….
I just discovered a fact that might interest you.
90% of serotonin is manufactured in the gut.
So, if we have healthy, well looked after gut, we’re likely to produce more serotonin.
And, potentially, benefit from that.
I’ll be honest, the connection between the guts and mental health and mood is a little bit unconfirmed at best.
But…………
Purely anecdotally…………
I’ve never known anyone who didn’t improve how they eat, who didn’t then feel better for it.
If being lighter in a few months time isn’t enough of a motivator for eating better…………
Then maybe this is!
Much love,
Jon ‘& Glory’ Hall
P.S. I could name probably pushing a hundred people who’ve told me they’ve come off anti-depressants whilst on our programme. Check www.myrise.co.uk/apply if that (or just generally feeling better) sounds good to you 🙂
