Remember the London Olympics?
Boss, wasn’t it?
I read the other day that 8.8% of competitors won a medal.
Obviously some, like old Phelpsey, won a few.
You could look at that stat and say 91.2% were losers.
More if you wants to count anything but gold as losing.
Harsh of course.
But if that was your criteria of judging, you’d be correct.
If you wanted to take the entire population who, could, in theory, do that event, you could say 99.999% of people are losers.
Because, unless you are the very ‘best’ at something in the whole world, there’ll always be someone better than you!
And, whilst competing with others has its place…….
Competing with yourself is the key to long term success.
Extrinsic rewards along their way (medals, etc) are cool.
But the intrinsic motivation of stead self improvement……..
And of enjoying the process…….
Are key to getting anywhere.
Don’t ever worry about what anyone else is doing.
Don’t worry that you’ll be “the fattest one there”.
Or about others being stronger / faster / ‘better’ than you.
If you’re improving on where you were bit by bit……..
Then that is awesome.
And better than the vast majority of the population are doing as they slowly ‘slip’ backwards.
