The last 10 years of so have seen a huge increase in the amount of conversation happening around mental health.

Which is awesome.

I will cover tomorrow what works even better than conversation.

But today I’m going to explore one aspect of the mental health conversation that I believe is rarely considered.

And that is that all emotions have their place.

They are all there for a reason.

That all emotions can benefit us.

We wouldn’t have developed them through evolution if they didn’t.

Several emotions are commonly put across as entirely being bad things.

Things to be avoided.

Things that are a automatically a problem if we’re experiencing them.

They’re often termed “negative emotions”.

Whereas I prefer the term “unpleasant emotions”.

They’re not nice, sure.

I doubt that we enjoy feeling them.

But they have their place.

We can’t go completely without them.

Life doesn’t work that way.

Sometimes we’ll feel down.

Sometimes we’ll be frustrated.

Sad.

Angry.

Disappointed.

And that’s ok.

Those emotions are there for a reason.

And telling ourselves that they’re “bad” and that we “shouldn’t be feeling” them just makes it worse.

Much love,

Jon ‘in kind’ Hall
