I mentioned the other day, that 16 years ago I went on my very first fitness course.
My Level 2 Fitness Instructor at the YMCA down in Cambridge.
I was reminded of something I was taught on this course when I was flicking though my Facebook feed the other day.
And that was, when demoing exercises, “always use the same, or a lighter, weight than the person you’re showing it to will use”.
ie. “Don’t load up the bar and do a 100kg Bench Press, then remove the plates and start them on 20kg”.
Or “Don’t pick up two kettlebells, demo with a heavy one and then give them the lighter one”
The reason is pretty obvious.
It’s not going to make someone feel great about themselves if they’re doing a smaller weight than the person showing them.
People would probably expect the person showing them can lift heavier weights.
But we don’t need to rub their nose in it.
This doesn’t seem to be the case with most FitPros now.
Many put out amazing exercise instructional videos.
With superb knowledge.
Why RISE is Different From Gyms
### Note: You may wonder why RISE doesn’t put out much in the way of exercise instructional videos.
It’s because our average new member hasn’t been a big fan of gyms (and diets and slimming clubs) in the past so learning how to do more exercises isn’t what they need at that point.
And our existing members get more than enough ‘in person’ instruction. Check out our briefing meetings if you haven’t already and want an approach designed to get results, rather than just about lifting heavy weights ###
But they use their PB (or close to) weight to demo.
Showing squats with 150kg+.
Or using huge dumbells, kettlebells, etc.
“Look at me. I know lots of exercises and am really strong” is the subtext.
Which is cool, if that’s what they want to do.
Not our way of doing things at RISE in Macclesfield.
We might post occasional videos of us hitting PBs on our personal page.
But, making new people feel inferior right from the start isn’t the way we roll 😉
Much love,
Jon ‘Life’ Hall and Matt ‘Fluid’ Nicholson
