I’m sat in the car park at Macclesfield Leisure Centre writing this blog.

My middle son is in his swimming lesson.

He doesn’t really want me watching any more and, we weren’t allowed to anyway during COVID and it’s a “thing” to get back to it.

Plus it’s roasting hot today and it’s warm in that viewing area at the best of times.

Out of all the activities the kids do, swimming is the only non negotiable.

They’ve asked about stopping everything else they’ve ever done at various points when they’re not really feeling like it.

Sometimes they do end up stopping.

Sometimes some gentle encouragement gets them past a sticking point.

But I don’t even engage in conversations about stopping swimming until they get to Level 7.

Middle son spent about two years on Level 5 and is now about half way through Level 6..

With a major part of that delay being down to a lack of lessons and swimming in general due to the restrictions.

Because you don’t get any better at swimming without swimming.

You have to throw yourself in and go for it.

Just dipping our toes in will do next to nothing.

Like most things.

We only get where we want to get to by actually doing.

Theory has it’s place, of course.

But it’s action that produces the results.

And like working our way through the swimming levels, we start mediocre (at best) and practice ourselves better.

To get better at something we have to be willing to do it badly.

We have to just get in and do it and get better with time.

We get better at eating healthily by eating healthily.

We get better at exercising by exercising.

We get better at drinking more water by drinking more water.

We get better at drinking less alcohol by drinking less alcohol.

We get better at getting more sleep by getting more sleep.

We get better at meditating by meditating.

And, much like we could learn to swim by ourselves, we’re much more likely to get there (and considerably more quickly) with a swim teacher………..

A coach and a set up like we have will make it much more likely that we’ll actually get the (and considerably more quickly) – click here if more likely and more quickly is something you’re up for –> www.myrise.co.uk/apply .

Much love,

Jon ‘BSc SSc’ Hall

P.S. Any takers for that (dated and niche) middle name?
