Hands up if you lived through the 80s and early 90s.

Remember the VCR you had?

Big, chunky thing that you loaded tapes into.

Set the time to record and left the TV on the right channel.

Got home and went to watch your programme.

Got to the best bit and, suddenly, it would flick over to EastEnders.

Your mum (other family members and programmes are available) had come in and changed the channel.

Or your programme had started late as you missed the end of it on the recording.

The next generation of VCRs had their own channel selection, independent of what the TV itself was doing.

Then we got Tivo, Sky+ etc.

Then you could set them to record from your phone.

Now we can ‘catch up’ on pretty much everything.

Recording stuff, once prone with potential pitfalls, has become easier than ever.

Like recording our food.

Apps like MyFitnessPal have massive databases of any food you’re likely to ever have.

And barcode scanners that’ll bring up the info for anything with a label (most food now).

Once we’re familiar with how it works, we can record most meals in a minute or so.

90 minutes a month if we do it ongoing.

The time for two workouts, for way more benefit.

Less than half an hour all in (including getting the hang of it) for a handful of days to get some clarity on where changes can be made.

We can pre-enter big social event in advance and work around them.

Planning on having a big meal and ten drinks at certain points over Christmas?

That’s fine.

Punch it in on the relevant day(s) and make the rest of the week(s) average out around it.

If it makes you implement some ‘damage limitation’ around said ‘do’, that’s cool.

If you’re happy to adjust elsewhere, that’s fine too.

But, at least you know where you stand.

The difficulty in recording our food consumption isn’t in the physical process of doing it.

It’s in the mental resistance to doing it (it’s like clicking this link to take the next step with us in January. Not physically hard, but a big step, we know. But a step that everyone who’s ever take it thought was one of the best they ever took –> myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting).

It’s not the 80s where recording is full of potential pitfalls.

It’s easy to do on the computer in our pocket and, probably, the most powerful thing we can do for our results.

Much love,

Jon ‘Betamax’ Hall and Matt ‘VHS’ Nicholson
