On Saturday just gone we entered another team at Born Survivor.

For those that don’t know, it’s a 10k OCR held each year at Capeshorne Hall.

10 kilometres of walking / jogging / running through the grounds of Capesthorne with 33 obstacles along the way.

Which, on the face of it, is pretty much the last thing most people who join us would ever think they’d even consider.

Our average member generally hasn’t gotten on with conventional gyms in the past.

Not their cup of tea.

I’m not sure anyone has ever joined who was into OCRs.

And yet, for some reason, over the years has become one of our things.

Something that, every year, a large number of our members feel the need to have a go at.

For me, it’s just the right level.

Challenging, but doable.

Everyone goes at their own pace in groups that help each other.

Any obstacles people really don’t want to do they can just bypass.

It’s not, by any stretch of the imagination, easy.

But it’s within the realms of possibility for more people than they might realise.

In the run up to the day last week there was a lot of nerves.

Anxiety you could call it.

Completely understandable.

I did a video in the members only group last Thursday that really seemed to resonate with a lot of people.

Talking about how I think anxiety sometimes gets a bad name.

Now, before I get misquoted, I’m not talking about the more chronic variety.

Although I also believe that there are different conversations we can have around that than are sometimes had.

I’m talking here about feeling anxious about a specific thing.

About an event like this that, let’s face it, is a bit scary.

About trying something new.

About a thing we’ve got coming up that’s important.

I said in this video that anxiety “can just show that we give a sh*t about how something might go”.

It’s out of our comfort zone and challenging.

It’s something that could go badly if we don’t give some thought as to how we’re going to prepare for and do it.

And all of these things are absolutely fine.

A life without any of that would probably end up being a life that we weren’t very happy with.

It’s okay to challenge ourselves and feel nervous about the outcome.

It’s important that our brain highlights the things that can go wrong so we can make plans to make it go right.

I was talking to James and Lowri just before we started on Saturday.

They’d found my video beneficial.

They are both doctors and talked about how anxiety can often be “over medicalized”.

All emotions have their place.

We successfully evolved as a species, in part, because of our emotions.

They’re all there for a reason.

They all do something

Anxiety can just be seen as ‘the emotion of growth’ in many cases.

We can choose to lean into it.

Recognise it is a sign that we’re stretching ourselves.

We’re growing and evolving.

It’s an indicator that we’re doing something about some aspects of our life that we’re currently less than 100% happy with.

It’s when we feel a certain way and then tell ourselves that we shouldn’t feel that way that it makes even worse.

We think there’s something wrong with us.

We label it as a condition or something that we “have”.

“My anxiety”.

In many situations it can be just seen as an emotion that’s there for a reason.

And a good reason as that.

Much love,

Jon ‘Butterflies’ Hall
