Anyone catch The Apprentice last night?
The wife and I watch it regularly.
Wednesday is the first day of the week when we have all the kids together………
And it’s perfect to relax to after the whirlwind of the previous few hours.
In last night’s episode they were given the task of creating ‘healthy’ snacks.
And we saw them plucking random ‘healthy buzzwords’ out of the air.
Then trying to make sure there was just enough of certain ingredients that they could make these health claims.
And nyone that’s ever seen the programme will notice that initially all the contestants come across as utter (for want of a better term) knob heads, don’t they?
Particularly in the first episode as they play the pre recorded head shots of them bigging themselves up.
“Everything I touch turns to sold”
“When it comes to business, I am like an animal. And I will roar my way to the top!”
“I truly am the reflection of perfection”
As the series progresses, most of them turn out to be not that bad.
Ish!
Tis a case of selective editing, of course.
They are, of course, encouraged to ‘play the game’.
Then, out of all the things the contestants say, they air the ones that cast them in a certain light.

You can do the same with lots of things.
Only show or mention certain things to make them appear a certain way.
Like the contestants did last night, this is the way food marketers describe crap food.
Just because something is low in something or high in something, doesn’t make it healthy.
Arsenic is “100% natural and low in fat”
Dog muck is “long fermented and made from dozens of different fresh, natural ingredients”
That table in front of you is “a natural source of fibre.”
And so on.
So, just because something can be described as ‘low fat’ or ‘a source of Vitamin XYZ’ or ‘High in ……..’ doesn’t automatically mean it’s healthy.
In fact, from experience, you’re fairly safe if you discount anything that makes any sort of health claims.
Real food doesn’t come with them.
You never see fresh meat, fish, veg, fruit, nuts, etc with colourful labels on them telling you how healthy they are, do you?
Avoid things labelled as healthy (or labelled, full stop) and you’re off to a good start 🙂
