“At first I was afraid, I was petrified
Kept thinking I could never live without you by my side
But then I spent so many nights thinking how you did me wrong
And I grew strong
And I learned how to get along”

The words of course, to the 1978 Gloria Gaynor disco classic “I will survive”.

About a unwelcome ex in this case.

But you know how I like ‘parallels’.

You can use it for anything that’s not been good for you, overall.

Anything you’ve got that bitter-sweet relationship with.

That part of you benefits from in some way.

But is actually bad for you.

Shitty food for example.

People often come to us having struggled to ‘give up’ certain things over the years.

Chocolate coated sugar bars, cake, biscuits, excessive booze, etc, etc.

Because, ultimately, they don’t actually want to ‘give it up’.

And then they come to a realisation.

Like an abused partner.

That its a toxic relationship.

That needs to be ‘let go of’.

That’s its just not worth it.

That there is other options out there that will make them feel better.

That will have all (or, at least, most) of the old pluses.

But less / none of the negatives.

They realise that they need to start treating themselves with love and respect.

That exercise and healthy eating aren’t about punishment and restriction……..

But celebration and reward.
