If you’ve read these for a while (or watched the videos we do) you may have noticed that I bang on about calorie deficits a bit.

It’s an attempted anti-dote to all the other much less important stuff you’ll be getting bombarded with elsewhere.

The confusing and often conflicting advice many of our contemporaries are putting out there.

That leaves you unsure what to do.

“Can I eat this?”

“Should I eat at this time?”

“Should I cut out XYZ?”

“Do I need this supplement?”

“Do I need special jab or coffee?”

We keep our message simple as it’s already being over-complicated pretty much everywhere else.

Sometimes I get replies that suggest we’re over simplifying it.

Pointing out the role of various other factors.

Sometimes valid.

Sometimes not.

“Calories aren’t everything” is a common phrase sent in reply to these blogs or videos.

And we know they aren’t.

In the same way as BODMAS isn’t everything for maths.

You remember BODMAS, yeah?

Or, perhaps, PEDMAS?

The order of operations in which you approach mathematical functions, unless otherwise specified.

Brackets – Orders – Division – Multiplication – Addition – Subtraction.

Or Parenthesis and Exponentials if you’re that way inclined (or you could even stick an I for Indices in there Google tells me).

Those six functions are fairly essential in maths.

Not everything, sure.

There’s more complicated stuff ‘above that’.

But that’s usually ‘built’ on the foundation of those functions.

Without brackets, orders, division, multiplication, addition and subtraction, there isn’t much left with maths.

None of the other stuff really works or matters.

And a calorie deficit is much the same.

From a weight loss perspective.

There is other stuff that is valid and worth considering (and there’s plenty we can just outright ignore).

But without that deficit ‘underpinning’ the other things, it doesn’t really work or matter.

We won’t lose weight.

The other things are things that, perhaps, we can consider in order to create that deficit.

Not things that bypass it.

So, sure, calories aren’t “everything”.

And neither is BODMAS.

But we’ll struggle to get the answer we want without.

Much love,

Jon ‘You’re the doctor, it’s so much fun to play’ Hall
