Here we go.

If you’ve stuck with us this long, you’re about to see what we mean by Competence with regards to personal training in Macclesfield and your motivation.

Competence is that feeling that ‘you can do it’.

That, with effort, you can improve at things and achieve a goal.

Competence is easily thwarted.

If you’ve tried to lose weight before and struggled……..

Or regained it after………

Maybe 5 or 10 or 20 times……….

It’s easy to lose faith that you can do it.

It’s easy to feel that you can’t do a certain exercise.

That “this isn’t for people like me because of my age / fitness level / busy life / injuries / other challenges.”

That it’s “too much to do on top of everything else”

When we feel that it’s something we can do……..

Our motivation is helped considerably.

It’s why where, possible, we ‘scale’ exercises for members.

Rather than doing different ones.

Take a press up.

You can go from doing it against a wall whilst stood up………

Through hands and knees, part way down……..

To doing it on hands and toes, all the way down with me sat on your back.

There’s a version appropriate for anyone.

Weights from 1kg to as much as you can fit on an Olympic Bar (200kg plus).

Session design that is more about doing as much as you can, rather than doing a certain amount.

We want every member to come out every session feeling that they were able to do it.

And looking forward to progressing on the next one.

Not deflated because they felt they couldn’t do it in some way.

And members that track the score for each Sessions always stay longer and get better results – they are literally seeing pretty much every time they come in that they are making progress.

When we see continued progress in some way……….

We feel we can do it.

Whether it’s more reps, more time, more weight, more weight lost, observations from the coach or whatever it may be ………

You feel that your efforts are helping you get ‘better’ in some way……..

You’re likely to continue making said efforts.

Lose that feeling of Competence and you’ll struggle to stay motivated.

So, there we have it.

Self Determination Theory (SDT) in a nutshell.

ABC.

Autonomy.

Belonging.

Competence.

If you can see where any of these are being thwarted……..

Either by yourself or by others………

Then that’s a starting point for changes……..

That should help create that environment…….

Where motivation grows and continues within you 🙂

Let us know if you need any help and aren’t sure though?

Much love,

Jon ‘Incompetent’ Hall
