About a year ago I was talking to a FitPro friend at his facility I’d just had a workout at.
He mentioned one of his staff was “absolutely killing it on Instagram”.
I’ve never really got on with Instagram (seems like Facebook but without most of the features I use the most – groups mainly – and I can’t tell who most of my friends on it are as they don’t use real names).
So I asked him about that.
Apparently the staff member was getting a lot of “traction” with his posts.
A lot of likes, comment and views.
Recently I was back there.
It came up that said staff member is still “killing it on Instagram”.
It also came up that he still lives with his mum.
Which, of course, is fine if that’s what he wants to do.
But I didn’t really get the impression he did.
For all his “crushing it” he doesn’t seem to be making as much money as he’d like.
Which is a shame – he’s a nice guy.
But it’s a classic example of looking at the wrong metric.
Or at least, focusing too much on measures that are, at best markers or milestones.
But not ones that automatically lead to the desired result.
My coach often says “The only two numbers that matter in your business are the one with the pound sign in front of it and the number of hours you work”.
Sure, there’s more to it than that.
Lots of other numbers that can be improved on to make those two what we’d like.
But, ultimately, if they aren’t, at least, at and acceptable level…………
Nothing else matters.
The business won’t carry on long.
Social media interaction, click through rates, lead conversion, member retention and many, many other numbers are ones we know about and strive to improve or maintain.
But, ultimately, we can’t pay the bills and feed the kids on ‘likes’.
And it’s the same with our olde health and fitness journey.
There are lots of metrics we can use.
And they all have their place.
But if a few key ones aren’t in place, it doesn’t really matter.
We can use methods like Intermittent Fasting (formerly known as ‘not eating’), food group elimination (such paleo, keto, vegan and high or low anything), different coloured days and much more…………
But, from a weight loss perspective, it doesn’t matter if we don’t achieve the ‘principle’ of being in a calorie deficit.
We won’t lose weight.
Same with exercise.
Session frequency and duration other factors are all worth knowing.
But, unless we’re actually getting fitter and / or healthier from doing it (or maintaining) it, again, doesn’t really matter.
We can go to the gym every day – but if we just plod away on a few cardio machines, go through the motions on a few resistance ones then ‘eat back’ the surprisingly low number of calories we actually used………….
It won’t do anything.
Ultimately, it’s fine to know these yardsticks we can asses against.
To improve them, where possible.
But, it’s always worth remembering that there’s a few key things we need to hit.
And if we’re not, it kinda doesn’t matter.
Ultimately, find the way(s) to hit these that you find easiest (we’re pretty good at helping with that 😉 –> myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting).
And do that more often than not.
Much love,
Jon ‘Just killed a man’ Hall and Matt ‘Said knock you out’ Nicholson
