A few weeks ago we ran a ‘7 day, 5 minute “feel less sh!t challenge”‘.

Where the idea was that people would pick something they could do each day that would make them feel better………

Then I’d check in with them each day that they’d done it.

It went really well.

Well, as well as these things ever do.

There is a drop off at every stage.

For every 100 people who join the Facebook group, only maybe 60 or 70 will then confirm they actually intend to take part.

50ish will actually start.

And we’ll then lose a couple each day till the end.

They get tagged in every check in post and then followed up with so it’s not like they’ve missed it.

But, we get it – there’s only ever going to be so much “buy in” for something like this, especially when it’s free.

For those that saw it through, we got great feedback.

Everyone reporting improvements of how they felt of between one and six out of ten.

Pretty good for a total of no more than 35 minutes effort out of 10,080.

A third of a percent of the week.

What many particularly liked was the daily check in.

That regular accountability.

Several asked if it could continue

“Can you give me accountability every day?”

And, of course, we could.

It wouldn’t be a great deal of effort to check in with people every day.

But………..

From our experience………….

If someone has to check you’ve what you said you would every day………….

It’s something you don’t want to do.

Or, if you did to start, you’ll quickly reframe it to something you don’t want to do.

It’s like when people volunteer to do something they really care about……….

And it then becomes a paid role………..

And they don’t like it as much anymore.

Absence through “illness” is higher in the same roles when paid as when they are voluntary.

The frame they’re seeing it through has changed.

If someone is checking that we’ve done something every day, it’ll soon start to feel a bit of a pain.

From our experience, this kind of thing can work well to create a “good start”.

To help people get over that initial inertia.

To maybe see that the “thing” wasn’t as big a deal as they’d made it in their head.

But the desire to continue has to come from within.

Because of the value the thing brings.

The feeling better or whatever else.

We want to do it.

For what it gives us.

And, over time, that becomes our new habits.

Our identity.

We see ourselves more and more as the kind of person who “just does” that stuff.

And not so much as stuff we’re making ourselves do and would like to be held accountable to.
