I’m about to show you a number.

It’s a big one.

I’d like you to look at it for just a few seconds.

And try and memorise it.

It’s pretty hard.

It’s a big number for only a few seconds.

Are you ready?

Here we go……….

149162536496481100121144

Right, stop looking at it and scroll down a bit.

…..

…..

…..

Without looking back up, can you remember it?

I was given this exact test on an online course I did recently.

I was one of only two to get it right.

I’ll be honest, it’s because I’m a massive geek (fun fact: when I first said this line into Google voice-to-text it came back with “I’m a massive d!ck”).

The second he said it was going to be difficult, I saw it as a challenge.

Afterwards most of the guys said that when they heard that they switched off, assuming they’d not be able to do it.

I’d also assumed, correctly, that it wasn’t going to just be a random number that was genuinely hard to remember as there wouldn’t be much point to that exercise.

I assumed there’d be a pattern.

And I was right.

It’s consecutive squared numbers.

One squared followed by two squared followed by three squared and so on.

149162536496481100121144 = 1 4 9 16 25 36 49 64 81 100 121 144

There’s a couple of lessons in there.

Firstly, our attitude going into anything is invaluable.

If we assume that we can’t do something and it’s not going to happen…….

Then we’ll probably make that a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I appreciate that it’s often a step too far for people to assume that they’re about to smash something that they’ve struggled with before………

But we can approach things with an attitude of “I know I can do this given an application of effort and some support along the way”.

And, secondly, going into things with the expectation that there is probably a better way to do it than we might initially expect………..

Means that we’ll often approach it in a way that serves us better.

If we go into things with a blunt force “just do it” approach………

We’re likely to have the same success as if we “just try and remember the number”.

If we stop and put a bit of thought into “What’s the easiest way I can make this happen?……..

And find an approach that we’re much more likely to do………

Even if there is another approach that, if done, might lead to quicker results………

Then we’re much more likely to actually do those things and get those results!

Much love,

Jon ‘Some would argue that Google’s “massive d!ck” suggestion isn’t too far from the truth ;)’ Hall

P.S. If you’d like proven help (with a Money Back Guarantee) in helping some of your numbers (weight, body part circumference, blood pressure, cholesterol, etc) go down and others come up (1-10 self assessment of mood, energy levels and mental health) then you’ll find that at www.myrise.co.uk/apply. Whether for now or for after Christmas, but don’t leave it too long as the January places will all go!
