In September 2011 I went on a course in Bath.
It was about, amongst other things, the impact of hormones on weight loss and gain, and fat distribution.
Like most people who’ve been on that course I came back and started banging on about the importance of balancing your hormones through nutrition and exercise in order to lose weight.
Eating and training a particular way would get those pesky hormones to the right level and the weight would drop off.
What is the Impact of Hormones on Weight Loss?
Since then I’ve come to realise a few things.
Or perhaps, more accurately, put the things I knew into a better context.
Hormones do play a part.
But only a part.
If energy balance (calories in vs. calories out) is positive, we will gain weight.
If it’s negative we’ll lose weight.
Fuelling the body in the way it’s designed to be fuelled……….
Nourishing it and looking after it……….
And allowing our hormones to ‘do their job’ in the way they always used to……..
Makes getting that energy balance easier, sure.
But hormones don’t overrule calories.
Living our lives in certain ways can cause things to happen in our body (including hormone levels) that can make it incredibly difficult to maintain that calorie deficit………
Requiring almighty levels of will power………..
But if that calorie deficit WAS maintained then we would lose weight.
Energy and Hormones
Energy doesn’t stop existing when our hormones are ‘balanced’.
Nor does energy become ‘more’ when hormones are ‘out of whack’.
Some people do have pretty major issues with their hormones and other systems in their bodies and massively benefit from protocols to address that.
But for the vast majority, that energy balance is a much bigger win.
And, what happens with most people when they try and eat a very specific way……..
Is they do it for a while………
Then “fall off the bandwagon”.
Some perceived ‘failure’ to ‘stick to it’ causes them to stop completely.
Adding to to a list of thing they ‘can’t do’.
And it’s very easy to think “ah, it’s my hormones, not that I’m eating too much”.
So, sure, aim to eat in a way that works with your body.
Consider the implications of our actions (food, drink, exercise, sleep, stress and so on) on our hormones and body in general.
But let’s not then forget about the calories?
And let’s not think that if things don’t go ‘according to plan’ then our hormones are doomed and we may as well mainline some cake?
Much love,
