Over the last few years I’ve found that the quality of burgers served in most restaurants has massively improved.

Real nice quality meat rather than the left over bits that goes into some burgers.

Well seasoned and cooked and served with nice garnishes and sides.

Consequently I’ve probably had a burger when we eat out a lot more frequently than I used to.

It’s not uncommon when I’m eating out that I’ll see someone I know.

It’s also not uncommon that, if they see me eating a burger, they’ll say “Cheat meal?”

“No” I’ll normally reply.

“It’s just a burger”.

The concept of a cheat meal has been around a long time.

But it’s entered everyday language much more over the last decade.

Here’s one definition of it;

“Cheat meals are any meals made up of foods that will not lead you towards your health or weight-loss goals. The meals are considered a cheat since you are not staying true to your desired eating plan.”

It’s when someone is eating in a specific way and then has a meal that doesn’t fit in line with that.

They’re “going no carb” then smash a load of carbs.

They go way over their normal calorie allowance for that time frame.

They have some ingredients that they’ve deemed “unhealthy”.

And I get it.

I works for some people.

For most people I encounter, it doesn’t.

It adds to this idea that the way we’re eating, isn’t what we really want to do.

That we’re able to force ourselves to do it because there’s light at the end of the tunnel.

That “eating healthy” is boring and restrictive – something we’re tempted to cheat on.

That foods fall into one of two camps – healthy or unhealthy.

If we just look to create an average across the course of the week that takes us in the direction we want to go in, there’s nothing to cheat on.

To use my favourite analogy of a financial budget, if we had £100 cash to spend each week, we wouldn’t think we’d cheated if we spent £25 one day would we?

We’d just adjust elsewhere to come in on budget.

Much love,

Jon ‘Codes’ Hall
