———————-

The weather has been nicer recently, hasn’t it.

The kids and I have started spending more time in the park, which is just over the road from our house.

Whilst we’re there, they invariably ask for a ice cream.

Which is fine by me.

But I usually pre-empt that by grabbing a multi-pack on the way from the Co-Op.

Or bringing one from the freezer if we have anything in.

I’ll often get a box of choc ices.

My eldest complained about this the other day.

“Choc ices aren’t as good” he said.

And I agreed.

They’re not, are they?

Put a choc ice up against a Magnum and you’ve only got one winner, haven’t you?

But……………

There’s quite a price differential here.

There’s six of us.

So an individual ice cream each from the cafe will come to £10 to £12.

A box of choc ices is £1.

Are magnums (other ice creams are available) 10 or more times as good?

Is it worth that extra cost when all else (time and effort) is pretty much equal?

Not in my book.

Not most of the time anyway.

They’re not that much better.

Choc ices are perfectly enjoyable.

And if that was the only option, we’d love them.

It’s comparing it to the other options that can make them seem “less than”.

And it can be the same with a lot of food choices.

Is a salad as enjoyable to eat as a Domino’s pizza (insert your own favourite take out here)?

Nope.

But is the difference in ‘cost’ sufficient to make it worthwhile (most of the time).

If the calories are several times the amount, is it worth it?

Maybe sometimes, but it’s worth asking the question.

Just like we’d have to spend £9 to £11 less elsewhere if we went for the cafe ice creams (or get into ‘debt’)………………

We’d have to have a number of hundred (or thousand) calories less elsewhere (or get into ‘weight gain’).

If Domino’s had never existed, we’d enjoy that salad (or other better choice) perfectly fine.

It’s easy to look at what we’re “missing out on”.

Rather than what we are gaining and saving (a big mindset shift our members take when they first start – check myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting if you’d like to find out about an approach based on what you’re gaining rather that cutting stuff out).

Turn that around (“We’re £11 up and had an ice cream each) and see how that helps 🙂

Much love,
