In all areas of our life we could imagine two lines.
Our standards.
And our reality.
What we expect and think we should be doing.
And what’s actually happening.
And, in the vast majority of cases, for all of us, there’s a gap between these two lines.
That’s normal.
Very few of us live up to our own standards in every area of our lives (myself included).
There’s always a gap.
It’s just how big that gap is and how we feel about it.
And when that gap gets too big, one of two things normally happens.
We move one of those two lines.
We either change our reality.
Or we lower our standards.
We settle.
We tell ourselves that “it’s fine”.
“It’s ok”.
“It’s not that big a deal”.
That we’re actually happy with things as they are.
That the effort required to move the reality line isn’t worth it.
And there’s no right or wrong.
Who am I to tell someone else where those lines should sit in their life?
But, as always, it’s worth being aware of.
Being aware of that choice we make when the gap between our standards and our reality gets too big.
Knowing that any choice is ok.
It’s our call.
But that it is a choice.
Lowering your standards isn’t inherently bad.
Lying to yourself about whether you’re genuinely happy with the new standard is.
