Apparently the majority of decisions we make are made from two basic ‘models’.
The consequences model.
And / or the identity model.
We do (or don’t do) something because of somewhat that will (or won’t) happen.
We give someone some money because they’ll give us a product or service in exchange.
We eat a certain food because of the way it will make us feel.
We turn up for work as we know we’ll get paid.
And so on.
Or we’ll do something (or not) because we feel we are (or aren’t) the kind of person who would (or wouldn’t) do that.
We don’t steal when we know we won’t get caught because “we’re not that type of person”.
Or cheat on our spouses for the same reason.
We pick up litter because we “care about the environment”.
We hold back that temptation to scream at the kids because we are “a good parent”.
And so on.
The consequences model often only works for so long.
We’ll do something for a while because of some benefit.
We’ll workout because we know it’ll help us get fitter / healthier / slimmer.
Same with improved eating and drinking.
But, if we work on consequences alone, there’s usually a finite amount of time we’ll do these things for.
Might be days, might be years.
But it rarely lasts forever on consequences alone.
If our identity changes to us seeing ourselves as the kind of person who exercises regularly and eats and drinks well most of the time………..
We stand a way better chance of carrying on indefinitely.
As with many of the things we recommend……….
It starts ‘forced’ (people who click this link very rarely feel ‘ready’ –> myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting).
Thinking of yourself as “someone who looks after their body and health” will feel like a lie to start with, if you’re not there already.
As will “I am someone who exercises regularly and eats well most of the time”.
But………
Over time, they’ll become less ‘forced’.
It will become your identity.
