I’ve talked in these blogs before about the statement that “comparison is the thief of joy”.
And the idea that you should “never compare yourself to anyone else”.
And how, nice as that sounds in theory, it’s not going to happen.
Us humans compare ourselves to others and different situations.
That’s how we operate and that’s how we learn and that’s how we better ourselves.
Telling ourselves never to make any comparisons is just setting us up for that not happening.
I actually came to realisation the other day.
Not only does comparison not have to be the thief of joy……..
It can be the creator of it.
If we do it properly.
Successful comparison is about selecting that sweet spot.
Results that are far enough away from where we are now to motivate and enthuse us………..
But not so far away that it feels impossible and disspirits us.
And being smart with who we compare ourselves with.
Comparing ourselves to the 23-year-old fitness professional who gets paid for looking good, has no other commitments and lives with their mum will just set us up to feel bad.
Looking at how someone else who we perceive to be similar to us……..
And have a similar set of challenges to us……..
Has achieved a result that is realistic for us……
But that we’ve struggled with………
And determining what they’ve done (and how)………
Can enable us to then do those things and raise our own standards (something that we’ll help with through a programme with a decade long proven track record –> www.myrise.co.uk/apply) .
Allowing us to make the changes in our life that enable us to be happier with it and to enjoy life more.
If we’re intelligent and selective with who and what we compare ourselves and our situation to……..
Comparison not only doesn’t need to be the thief of joy……..
It can be the creator of it.
Much love,
Jon ‘Comparison Ford’ Hall
