On Friday, I mentioned that “We all have 168 hours in the week”.

You may have noticed that I didn’t include the word “same” in that.

You’ll have seen that version online many times, I’m sure.

But I don’t think that’s true.

I don’t think “we all have the same 168 hours in the week”.

Some people have more or less different things that they need to fit into that time.

Different levels of commitments.

But we do all have 168 hours.

10,080 minutes.

Over half a million minutes a year.

That’s just how time works.

We can’t “create” it.

We can’t “make” it.

We can just choose what we do in it.

We can choose how we assign it.

Not all of it, sure.

But probably more than we tell ourselves sometimes.

There’s probably more hours in the week that we currently assign to non essential activities than we might care to admit.

I include myself in this.

In several years of recommending it, I’ve never had a single person fill in an accurate time log for a number of days who hasn’t found that there is time there that they can reassign.

Not one person.

Zero.

I’ve had plenty essentially refuse to do it.

Usually telling me that they’ve “been too busy”.

Essentially saying that they’re “too busy to become less busy”.

But I think they usually know what it’s going to show and are avoiding that.

Maybe it will show that there’s time that we could reassign, but we’re actually happy with how it’s currently being used.

And that’s fine.

It might possibly show that there is no time that can be reassigned..

But I doubt it.

There’s only one way to find out.
