Someone asked me the other day if “it’s true that you get more efficient at exercise over time?”

Ie: That you can use less energy for doing the same amount of ‘work’.

Can doing, for example, 100 kettlebell swings burn fewer calories in 10 years time than it does now?

As always, we’ll look at what the research says (same as normal, check our monthly, no pressure, orientation meetings at RISE if you like the sound of an personal training and weight loss approach in Macclesfield that is enjoyable but also research, rather than opinion, based).

The short answer is “Yes”.

The slightly less short answer is “But not to the point where it makes much difference”.

More efficient at exercise

Do Top Athletes Become More Efficient at Exercise?

Studies on Lance Armstrong shows that his ‘efficiency’ improved by about 8% between the ages of 21 and 29.

About 1% per year.

Not a great deal.

And that’s with thousands and thousands of very, very intense and very, very long workouts.

And, you know, all those drugs.

Paula Radcliffe supposedly became 1.5% more efficient year on year in her prime.

Similar, massive training volumes.

No drugs though.

Do Normal People Become More Efficient at Exercise?

I’d be surprised if anyone of us ever had that much of a change.

And even if we did, it wouldn’t make that much difference for us.

If we burn 500 calories in a workout and it drops to 450 in a decade, that’s no biggie.

50 calories is barely a nibble of anything.

So, if you were interested (and even if you weren’t I suppose), then there’s the answer;

You can become more efficient at exercise, but not to the point where it will make any difference.

Much love,

Jon ‘In’ Hall and Matt ‘Co’ Nicholson
