In the last couple of blogs I’ve used the term “hyperpalatable”.

Things that are really easy to consume (and, therefore over consume).

But do you know what’s a little bit harder to swallow?

That, fundamentally, we’ve gained weight due to over consumption.

The human brain is very good at giving ourselves justifications that are outside of our locus of control.

I know this from being a human that does this.

It’s tempting to say that we’ve gained weight through some variations of;

– Not having access to the right foods

– Not being able to eat at the ‘right times’

– Other people feeding us

But, ultimately, we could have maintained weight or lost it by simply eating whatever we wanted to in calorie maintenance or deficit.

No studies have ever been done where someone was shown to gain weight when not in a calorie surplus.

Sure, some food options may be so calorie dense that an appropriate portion size leaves as ravenously hungry.

But that still doesn’t alter the fact that we did over consume.

We had more than we needed.

Now, I know there’s more to healthy eating and eating in general than just being in a calorie deficit

But that doesn’t mean we wouldn’t have lost weight in the calorie deficit.

If we’d have eaten exactly the same but in deficit versus surplus and had lost weight, that would have had a positive impact on our health.

There’s no getting away from that.

It might have been even better for our health to eat in a calorie deficit of fresh nutritious foods.

But that doesn’t mean that the calorie deficit of anything wasn’t also better for our health.

As always, I say this not to be mean but to empower.

If we accept that the primary reason that we gain weight is we’re in a calorie surplus, then it just becomes a conversation around ‘what is the best and most likely to happen way for us to create a calorie deficit?’

And, therefore, achieve the thing we want to achieve (www.myrise.co.uk/apply for proven help doing that – get set up for the New Year rather than missing the boat)

Much love,
