As part of the speed awareness course that I’ve been banging on about for the last few days, the instructor looked into some of the things that might affect our decisions around our driving.
And the behaviour of other people was a big impact for many.
Other road users “p*ssing me off”.
A “bad day at work”.
And so on.
Most agreeing that, at times, they can find driving a frustrating experience, and that this can impact their own driving.
Which I get.
I used to find the same.
Someone cut me up in traffic or honk at me undeservedly and it’d bother me for the rest of the day.
But I came to a realisation a number of years ago.
There is literally zero benefit to that.
Only downsides really.
I only have so much focus and emotional energy that I can give.
Any directed to things that I can’t control is then taken away from things that I can.
Negative focus and emotions taking away from positive focus and emotions.
And that was exactly where the course leader then directed the conversation.
Focusing on what we can control and not on what we can’t.
It is, of course, “easier said than done”.
But….. everything is easier said than done.
But that doesn’t mean that we can’t do it.
That we can’t train ourselves better at it through practise.
Every time we choose to shift our focus away from what we can’t control to what we can, it gets a bit easier to do that next time.
Every time we place our focus on what we can’t control on it, it makes that more likely in future.
This, of course, applies to all areas of our life and not just driving.
And, like focusing more on our own driving (whilst, of course, being aware of what others are doing)………
Focussing on what we can control will make the behaviours and results that we desire more likely (clicking this link will also make the results you’re after and awful lot more likely –> www.myrise.co.uk/apply)
Much love,
