While we’re on my little journey down memory lane (first job as an instructor and manager at Fitness First Hillsborough from last two blogs) – ten years ago I was an Area Manager for the company that ran the Personal Training brands for DW Sports Fitness, LA Fitness, FitSpace, MiiFit, some Fitness Firsts and so on.
I ran a region which ran from Macc up to Newcastle, Oldham across to Hull and all in between.
In the months before I left that role, the company bought in a new process to teach new PTs coming in the clubs.
We’d previously taught a three day all singing, all dancing ‘business course’ at the LA Fitness in Sale for new starters (in the North – there was one at Head Office in London for Southern starters).
————– As as side note, Jet from Gladiators taught a module on NLP as part of it. Which, as a teenage boy in the 90s, was very exciting —————-
This was replaced with a one day teaching of a fairly simple process for getting clients using vouchers given out on the gym floor and a website.
On the face of it, the course was much more basic.
Andrew and Nick, the Directors, explained to us that what “We don’t want the best. We want something that will work”.
Which, initially, was confusing.
Surely the best thing works the best?
I soon came to understand what they meant.
With the old course, it was too much for many new starters.
Some felt over faced and confused.
Not knowing where to start.
They went in the the clubs and did pretty much nothing.
Often leaving within a few months.
The new system was very simple and was pretty much guaranteed to get a PT enough clients if followed properly.
People knew exactly what to do the second they set foot in the clubs.
Those who wanted to do something more advanced could still do so and probably would have done their own thing after the original course.
New PT success rates and retention immediately improved.
It made conversations with the PTs who were struggling much simpler.
“Have you been following the process?”
“No”
“Well do that then”
In this case, the best wasn’t the best.
Something that will work was.
And it’s the same for the vast majority of people who want to get fitter and healthier, lose weight and so on.
We often think we want the ‘best’ way to do that.
“What’s the best way to lose weight” we often see on the internet.
The best isn’t always the best though.
Especially if we don’t stick to it.
“Train like an athlete and eat like a dietitian” many FitPros tell you.
And that will get results quickly, sure.
But if it’s too much and you don’t stick to it, it’s pointless.
You need what works.
A maintainable approach that takes you in the right direction.
As fast as you find maintainable I suppose.
A way of creating an average calorie deficit (or maintenance) whilst getting proper nourishment and of exercising that you enjoy (or, at the very least, find tolerable).
Make adjustments to get better return on investment, sure.
But going straight from nothing (or little) to ‘the best’ probably isn’t the answer.
Find something ‘that works’ (this might be it, if you haven’t checked us out already –> myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting).
And keep doing it indefinitely!
Much love,
