You may or may not know that when people express an interest in what we do at RISE, I’ll arrange a phone call with them.

No salesy stuff, no pressure.

Just an opportunity to run them through the programme and see if we’re a good fit for each other (it’s www.myrise.co.uk/apply to discover that for yourself).

That’s a two-way thing.

They choose us

But I choose them as well.

There’s no benefit to us working together if it’s not a good fit.

The form that they fill in when expressing interest tells them that I’ll be in contact to arrange a chat.

I’ll either give them a call or will exchange messages and book a time in that works.

Either way, that’s what they’re requesting to happen, it’s not a surprise.

Occasionally I’ll ring someone up at that pre-approved time and they answer the phone, realise who I am and hang up.

And I was talking about this recently with a friend who sometimes does calls through work and gets people occasionally hanging up on them too.

“Don’t you hate you when people hang up?” they said, as you’d probably guessed from the blog title.

“It’s fine”, I replied.

“At least I know where I stand quickly then”.

If there’s someone who’s willing to request a call, or even specifically book a time in, and then hang up when that call happens, I don’t think we’re a good fit for each other.

Better to know that then after only a number of minutes wasted rather than hours or weeks down the line.

I’d obviously rather they’ve cancelled the call, sure.

But there’s a definite order of preference (for me, at least);

1. Answer the call and become a member

2. Answer the call and we decide, for whatever reason, that it’s not a go-er, and I can recommend something that might be a better fit for them.

Both of those things are absolutely fine.

The purpose of the call is to help us both make an informed decision as to whether it’s a good fit.

Those two options both fulfil that.

The next best thing, for me, is;

3. The call doesn’t happen.

Preferably they cancelled, but hanging up only takes marginally longer.

The worst thing that can happen for my point of view is;

4. The aswer the call and make various promises about what they intend to do, which they don’t then fulfil.

Wether that be saying they’re going to join and then not……

Or conveniently not having their car details on them and then going radio silence after not turning up for the first Session that they’ve booked in for.

Or even just starting properly then ignoring all my attempts to help and disappearing.

And, I’m pretty confident if they’re the sort of person who’s willing to hang up on a call that they’ve arranged, there’s a pretty good chance they might have otherwise done option 4 rather than 1.

Getting to an end result as quickly as possible can be beneficial.

As it can be an all areas of life.

Getting a volume of exercise done in a fun, structured, coach led Session of 45 minutes will mean we’re more likely to do that than the boring hour or two that it might take us in the gym by ourselves.

Making some tactical swaps to our eating that lowers the calories (or some other marker of improvement) but with no additional time or expense needed is more likely to happen than cooking all our meals from scratch from multiple fresh ingredients.

Sometimes it’s easy to get hung up on getting the very best result.

But getting to a good enough result (or the most likely result)…….

As quickly as possible………

Will probably be more likely to lead us to our overall goals.

Much love,

Jon ‘ning on the telephone’ Hall
