I’ve had a couple of conversations recently with people about how frequently I contact members.

The other day I was talking to a potential new member on the phone.

And she expressed that she’d had concerns about joining because a friend had told her “Oh, I heard Jon keeps messaging you all the time”

“It depends what you mean by ‘all the time’, I suppose” I replied.

“There’s the daily blog which you can unsubscribe from”

“And then beyond that, they’ll be messages about things like social events, which would stop as soon as you said you could or couldn’t make it, and I’ll be chasing you up if you haven’t done what you said you would.”

Because, as I explain when people ask, that’s part of my job.

If someone wants somewhere where they can pay money, not go and then never hear from the people they’re paying money to then that part of the market is already sewn up.

Standard gyms will take your money and only ever contact you when you cancel your Direct Debit.

If you’ve told me something is important to you, I’m not going to pretend I haven’t noticed when you’ve stopped doing it.

And contacting you (by sending messages and phoning) when it’s not happening is part of making it happen.

Accountability doesn’t work if I give up on my end of the deal as soon as I don’t hear back from someone.

Much love,

Jon ‘SMS’ Hall

P.S. It’s www.myrise.co.uk/apply if you really do want accountability. Which will involve me contacting you when you’re struggling and not just leaving you to your own devices like others have before.
