I’ve mentioned before fitness memes that, for most people, have the opposite to the desired effect.
You can see attached my least favourite one;
FAILURE IS ACCEPTABLE
PUKING IS ACCEPTABLE
BLOOD IS ACCEPTABLE
TEARS IS ACCEPTABLE
PAIN IS ACCEPTABLE
SWEAT IS ACCEPTABLE
QUITING IS NOT
Leaving aside the pedant in me that says “Tears are acceptable”…………
I don’t know if the vast majority of the population see that and get super revved up.
On the walls of a spit and sawdust, hardcore body-builder gym, it’s cool.
In the local Globo Gym, I can’t see it being overly beneficial.
I was thinking about this the other day.
Funnily enough while ‘Everybody hurts’ by REM was playing in my car (hence the blog title).
Everybody does hurt.
And everybody quits.
Sure, we might have different ‘quit points’ for different activities compared to other people.
And that point will vary on a daily and weekly basis.
But to pretend some don’t quit and some do is very ‘black and white’.
Quitting is basically stopping doing something.
Usually because we’ve had enough.
And we all do that.
The difference between “quitting” and “stopping” and “finishing” is entirely in a definition of a level of performance of that task that we have assigned to it.
The line between “quitting” and “stopping” and “finishing” is entirely in our heads.
Our definition alone.
It’s very rare that we always do as much as is humanly possible of anything.
We choose to stop all things at some point.
And that’s fine.
The guys who fill social media with “beast mode” style posts could always do an extra set if they really wanted to.
No matter how hard they train, they could probably get an extra rep out.
If they did eight by themselves, I’m fairly sure they’d get a ninth one out if someone was stood there with a gun threatening a loved one if they didn’t?
Did they quit on eight reps?
On that extra set?
Only if that’s what the decide.
To me it only starts to shift into “quitting” when we regret it.
When we feel that, under the circumstances, we could have done more.
Did a reasonable workout when we really didn’t feel like doing anything at all?
That’s amazing!
Do enough reps to get some benefit when you really couldn’t be bothered?
Phenomenal!
Didn’t eat like a professional athlete at the end of a hard day, but made considerably better choices than you could have?
Awesome stuff!
“Success” and “failure” and “quitting” and “finishing” are just labels we assign, often with little real thought as to the point one turns to another.
Everyone quits ultimately.
It’s fine.
Knowing what process we’re willing to undertake for the results and benefits it brings………….
And what we’re not willing to do…………
Is where momentum in doing it is created (check www.myrise.co.uk/apply if you’d like momentum and results rather than perceived failure and disappointment)!
Much love,
