I’m sure you’ve probably heard this phrase before?

Maybe seen it on some memes?

“Fake it till you make it”

I get it.

But to me, it’s just not quite the right words.

The idea of “faking” it doesn’t quite sit right.

It sounds and feels like just being someone you’re not.

Has suggestions of trickery or deception.

And “making it” has certain connotations.

It feels a bit like “pretend to be someone you aren’t to trick people into giving you a better job and / or more money”.

I read a variation the other day that I liked much more:

“You don’t have to be that person to become that person”

You can change elements of who you are over time.

By ‘leaning in to’ parts of you that are already there.

Concept of self is fairly fluid at the best of times.

We see ourselves differently all the time.

And pretty much every other person will see us slightly differently.

You don’t need to be all the way to where you’d like to be to explore elements of yourself more.

You don’t need to be an experienced public speaker to speak publicly.

You don’t need to wait till you get that promotion before you start doing things more like what’s required in that position.

And you don’t need to be as slim, fit and healthy as you’d like to be………

To do what someone who is as slim, fit and healthy as you’d like to be….. does.

All those things are just things we can do.

If they conflict with our personal values, then not doing them is cool, of course.

But many of them won’t be that dissimilar to things we’re already doing.

We already talk to people.

We already do stuff at work.

We already eat and move.

We’re just, perhaps, looking to do it more like who we are in the process of becoming……..

Rather than waiting until we fully are there.

At the end of 2022, you could look back and ask if you became that person you’ve always wanted to be. Or not. The first option will be waaaayyyyyy more likely if you click this link and get involved –> www.myrise.co.uk/apply
