Group Personal Training Sessions at RISE last 45 minutes, as you may or may not know.

With explanation, demonstration and warm up at the start and cool down and stretch at the end, the main body of the work out is normally around 25 minutes.

Sometimes people ask if we can do a longer main workout.

Maybe make the whole session one hour?

My reply is invariably the same;

“We could do, but we’d have to drop the intensity for it to last longer”.

And people are often surprised at this.

“I could just keep doing the same intensity but for longer” they might say.

“In that case you’d be better off increasing the intensity for the current duration so that you, essentially, can’t do any longer”.

And I say exactly the same if people suggest doing two Sessions back-to-back.

Because intensity and duration are inversely proportional.

The higher the intensity the shorter the amount of time we can maintain it and vice versa.

It’s obvious when you think about it.

If it wasn’t, then why doesn’t Usain Bolt (newer sprinters, like Noah Lyles, are available) just keep going at 27 miles an hour and do a marathon in under an hour.

Why did Eddie Hall stop at one repetition on the 500 kilo deadlift rather than getting a brain bleed and passing out?

Now I’m not saying we need to go anywhere near those intensities.

But hopefully they are quite clear examples to make the point.

We don’t need to be dying at the end of the Session but we challenging ourselves will produce better results than not.

For the average member who just wants to get somewhat fitter, stronger and slimmer and increase their energy levels, fitness mood and mental health (whilst having fun with like-minded people in an intimidation free atmosphere – it’s www.myrise.co.uk/apply if you like the sound of that)………

Then the duration of our Sessions is plenty, given an appropriate intensity.

23 years of my own experience, plenty of scientific research and thousands of success stories say so.

Going for longer at a lower intensity isn’t the answer.
