You may or may not know what the initialism that is the title to this blog means.
F*ck my life.
Often put on the end of a social media post where someone points out something that’s happened that, at the very least, isn’t great.
I was thinking about this yesterday.
Are they better versions of FML that we can apply?
I came up with a few;
** Fix my life **
What changes can we make to the areas that we’re not happy with?
What can we do about the things we’d like to be different?
What plans can we put in place to make things better?
** Free my life **
How can we free up time, energy and other resources for the things in our life that we value more?
How can we learn to let go of the retained thoughts and ruminations that make us feel worse?
And, finally, I really wanted to do one one around ‘appreciation’.
But despite scouring online thesauruses, I couldn’t find anything that began with an F.
So you’ll have to excuse me for this being the best I could come up with;
** Fankful my life **
It’s so easy to take for granted all the good things in our life.
Our lives are unrecognizable from the equivalent from 100 years ago.
Or much more recently even.
The things that we have now that either didn’t exist then or are far more widely available now……..
Become the equivalent of a hot bath.
We aclimatize to it and stop noticing it.
The vast majority of our day and week that goes well just gets written off as expected behavior.
Immediately forgotten.
The relatively small proportion that isn’t ideal loses context in relation to the majority that’s somewhere between okay and really good.
We develop what could be seen as a ‘sense of entitlement’.
What was once something we (or others) desired becomes our new expected minimum normal.
But it doesn’t have to be that way.
We can choose appreciation.
We can choose to recognize and be glad for all the good in our lives.
Still work on changing the other stuff, of course.
But developing a different level of context.
So next time we’re tempted to think FML, or an equivalent……..
There’s a few other versions we could try on for size.
Much love,
Jon ‘I know, I know – Fankful was the best I could do’ Hall
