The best exercise for weight loss

Those of you that are parent’s will have noticed, I’m sure, how kids (grown ups too, I suppose) sometimes ‘regress’ on certain things.

They become “less good” at something than they used to be.

One thing our three bigger ones (9, 10 and 12) have recently regressed on is their formerly correct use of “how many?” and “how much?”

I don’t remember this being a thing a year ago.

But, nowadays, they seem to get it the wrong way round nearly all the time.

And we’ve no idea why.

“How much minutes have we got left” they might say.

Or “How many money does that cost?”.

Which is weird as they’re bright kids.

And, more importantly, they used to get it right, I’m sure.

But the old much-many swapsie is one we all sometimes erroneously make.

Perhaps, for example, when we talk about how ‘much’ food we eat.

Because, from a weight loss perspective, that doesn’t really matter.

Over the years I must’ve had a thousand or more people tell me “I don’t eat much”.

But, when asked what many calories we’re talking about, they’ve no idea.

Or, at best, a rough guess.

Because, from an energy balance perspective alone, 10 kilos of (some) mushrooms would be better than 100 grams of almonds.

100 times the amount (weight wise) of food.

For less calories.

An extreme example, of course.

And don’t switch off to that if you don’t like mushrooms 😉

The fundamental point is valid.

From a weight loss perspective, it’s not “how much” that’s relevant.

It’s “how many”.

Much love,

Jon ‘At least Jamie’s stopped randomly licking anything he’s unsure about’ Hall
