Have you ever considered that you’re “not good with names”?

Even if you don’t, I’m sure you’ve met people who have expressed that.

I used to think that too.

Until someone pointed out something.

It was that I wasn’t making much effort to remember names.

Someone was introduced to me and I just kind of hoped I would remember their name.

Ever since that realisation, I’ve made a concerted effort to remember names.

When I first hear someone’s name, I repeat it back in conversation and in my head.

Doesn’t normally take all that long doing that before it sticks.

I also have systems in place for tracking members names for both me and the coaches.

The effort that’s required to remember people’s names isn’t massive.

But it’s definitely more than zero effort.

And this is just one example of an area where it’s tempting to think that “we’re just not very good at” something……..

When actually it’s just those that are doing better at us have just put more time and effort in.

I don’t dispute that there are natural advantages.

But that’s only part of the equation.

I’m pretty rubbish at football.

But if I’d played for 90 minutes every week for the last 30 years like some of my mates have, I’m sure I’d be an awful lot better.

That person we know who just seems to be naturally in great shape………

Will have just done hundreds of workouts and made countless different food choices that we haven’t seen.

Consuming or using a hundred extra calories per day (all else being equal)………

Would lead to a 50lbs weight difference over 5 years.

Make that a few hundred calories and we can increase that (or shorten the time frame).

Little bits of extra effort and different choices add up over time.

And show that “not very good at” (and it’s variations) often aren’t a thing.

Much love,
