The thing that people tell me that they struggle with the most is “motivation”.
Which I completely get.
I get it both from over two decades of helping people with this kind of thing.
And from nearly 45 years of being a human who finds the same.
I’ve had periods of been highly motivated with my eating and exercise.
And periods of feeling that “I really can’t be a*sed”.
Often those periods become about damage limitation.
Still doing some exercise and making better food choices than I could have done.
Rather than completely “stopping” and having more to do in the future.
But do you know when it’s most easy to be motivated?
It’s when we’re making forward progress.
When the weight’s coming off and we’re looking and feeling better, motivation usually springs forth.
When we’re going in the opposite direction or standing still it can feel a hard slog.
Ironically, the difference in what we actually have to do between making forward progress, maintaining where we are or going backwards is probably less than we might tell ourselves.
It can just involve some different food choices that take zero time or real effort.
Maybe a few hours in the week out of the 168 that are there.
The challenge is normally more mental than physical.
The true additional effort involved in forward progress compared to going backwards isn’t actually all that massive, in the grand scheme of things.
And when motivation is there, it’s all so much easier.
So, ironically, working a little bit harder can actually be easier.
Always worth remembering.
Much love,
