This last Saturday, we had the January RISE social.
It was a walk at Tegg’s Nose.
Great fun it was!
Amongst the various conversations I was having with members, there was one with regards to what people were doing that evening.
Coach Jen was off to the Ivy in Manchester for a member’s birthday.
And another member was off to a super fancy restaurant, whose name escapes me, that they’ve been looking forward to for ages.
“What should I eat?” they asked me.
“Whatever you want” was my reply.
“Just enjoy it. You’ve been looking forward to it.”
Because, from my experience, that’s usually the best approach for such things.
We’re probably going to end up eating what we want anyway so we may as well go in with the mindset that that’s what we’re going to do, rather than planning on doing something else, and then feeling disappointed and frustrated with ourselves for not.
Telling ourselves that we’ve “failed” and beating ourselves up over the decision.
And then using that justification for further over-consumption.
Sure, we can maybe use a bit of common sense into a situations.
If there are two options of meals or drinks that we like equally and one contributes half the calories, then that’s a different decision worth making.
But we’d have to go absolutely mental on a social event to not then be able to average it out across the rest of the week, if we chose to.
And from my experience, an approach like that is far more likely to happen and lead us to the results that we desire (check www.myrise.co.uk/apply for a ‘knowingly sub-optimal’ approach that, for a decade straight has banged out better results than all the ‘theoretically better’ ways around).
Much love,
Jon ‘Agony Aunt’ Hall
