I’ve mentioned many times that the content of these blogs is often inspired by questions people ask us.
After all, if one person is unsure about something, there’s likely to be many others who aren’t mentioning it.
I was asked the other day if “protein is bad for your kidneys”.
We get this question most months as we recommend a balanced diet to new people.
Which, as most people have been going mega high carb, usually means lower carbs and more protein and fat.
Not low carb.
Carbs aren’t bad.
Just we find the high carb diet most people have accidentally been on doesn’t work all that well for them.
But, yeah – more protein for most people.
Is Protein Bad for Your Kidneys?
People have often read that “too much protein is bad for your kidneys”.
Is it?
The short answer is “No”.
Sure, if you consumed, I don’t know, a whole cow’s worth of protein every day, it probably wouldn’t be great.
In many ways.
But for an increased, but still normal consumption?
Or, even for a high but actually doable consumption (which we aren’t recommending, remember)?
Scientific Evidence on the Effects of Protein on Your Kidneys
Zero studies ever have shown that to be a problem (if you like the idea of working with people who actually check out verified studies on places like PubMed, rather than just going of what some guy said on the T-Nation forum, then check out more about what we do and how you can join RISE in Macclesfield).
Zero.
Out of loads.
It’s true that if you have kidney disease, a high protein diet can accelerate damage there.
A high one, not a balanced diet.
But it’s the kidney disease that’s the issue.
Not so much the protein.
Having kidney damage is bad for your kidneys.
So if you don’t have kidney disease (and you’d probably know if you did), you can go absolutely mental on the protein.
Or, maybe, just go for the more balanced diet.
Much love,
Jon ‘Beans’ Hall and Matt ‘Dish’ Nicholson
