My eldest son Oli started senior this last September.
As part of his new uniform, he now has a blazer.
And tie.
One morning, a few weeks ago, he couldn’t find it.
A frantic search unveiled nothing.
I sent him into school with £6 to get another one.
Worse case scenario, we’d have the spare we’d been meaning to get for a while (although, actually, that’s the best case scenario when you think about it).
It never turned up.
We reckon it must’ve fallen out in the car park when we went to visit ‘Grandad Pork Chop’ (he’s had a pig valve fitted, if you remember?) in hospital.
To try and stop it happening again, we discussed what we could do.
His initial suggestions amounted to ‘just trying harder’ not to lose it (“just try harder” is the extent of the advice you get from most FitPros. Check myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting if you’d like an approach with a little more to it than that. The meeting is in two days now BTW).
I suggested he have a set place for it.
And a set cue for putting it in said place.
We decided “in his blazer pocket”.
When he’s “gets in and out of the car”.
Piggybacking an existing habit.
They’ll soon be ‘welded in’ together as a paired habit.
Get in the car and tie either comes out the pocket or goes in.
Put on or taken off.
Cue – Craving – Response – Reward.
Cue: Get in or out of car
Craving: Want to have tie so don’t have to pay for another one and annoy Dad (me)
Response: Tie on / off and out / in pocket
Reward: Don’t have to pay got another tie and Dad is happy
Just trying harder is rarely the answer.
When looking to create a new habit, can you piggyback an existing one?
Can you change and existing one or create a new one by looking at that structure of a habit?
Cue – Craving – Response – Reward
Something instigates it (time, location, something you see, something you do, something someone else says or does, etc)
You want to do it for whatever reason
You do it
You get some sort of benefit (immediately, not just in the distant future)
