In 1999 UW–Madison and Texas A&M University polled “137 leading scholars of American public address” for what they felt were the best American speeches of the 20th century.
Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream speech” was ranked number one.
“I have a dream”.
Even if we don’t remember anymore than that, I should imagine we all know that bit.
Memorable isn’t it?
Really sticks in the mind.
Imagine if he’d said “I have a plan”.
In some ways plan is better.
A dream without a plan and without action doesn’t do much.
It’s the action that really makes the changes.
But……………
That ‘dream’ can be the powerful motivator that causes us to make plans.
And to take action.
A plan alone is fine.
But we’ll only get so far with that alone.
It’s hard to be really inspired by a plan alone isn’t it?
To get up day after day for year after year to just see a plan through.
A dream is needed.
A vision of where we’d like to be.
Whilst Dr King’s vision of that his “four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character”, has stood the test of time………….
We too can have dreams that can inspire us for a lifetime.
But……………
We need to find the right dream.
Six-packs and massive deadlifts inspire some.
And that’s cool.
But if that dream was sufficiently inspiring for us, we’d probably have them by now.
If we find the dream of sufficient energy, enthusiasm and patience to be the best parent / partner / employee / boss / friend that we can be……………
Then focusing on that makes more sense for us.
