The other week my two older sons were still off on Christmas holiday.

And my stepdaughter had a few days off school unwell.

My wife was back at work and her work requires her to be available in office hours (and the rest).

Outside of taking Sessions, my work can be done at any time I choose.

So on days like this, I make sure to keep myself at least somewhat free so they don’t spend the entire day staring at their phones.

Amongst other things, we played a few board games and games of cards.

Donkey was one of the card games we played.

If you haven’t heard of it, I won’t explain the full rules, but the loser of each hand gets given a letter.

D the first time they lose.

Than an O.

And so on, until somebody is a DONKEY.

My eldest son lost six games in a row.

The first time I’ve ever seen a “straight donkey” as I called it.

The games were spread out across a few sittings.

Initially he wasn’t up for playing the last session.

He didn’t want to lose again

Which, as I told him, I get.

No one wants to lose, let alone become a “straight donkey”.

But, as I explained to him, losing is an essential part of life.

And not just in games.

“You’re right Dad” he said.

“I can learn from this and get better”.

“It’s partly that” I replied.

“But sometimes you’ve just got to get through the losses to get to the wins”.

“If we stop doing something because we’re losing, we’ll never get to the point of winning.”

Stopping when it’s not going our way doesn’t make it going our way more likely.

It makes it even less likely

It, at most, hides it.

Sometimes things don’t go great.

Work stuff.

Relationship things,

Workouts.

Food choices.

Etc.

But we just need to keep going.

Keep getting through those unsuccessful ones to get to the successful ones.

Much love,

Jon ‘Hee haw’ Hall
