While we’re on the subject of negotiated higher starting salaries (yesterday’s blog)…………….

Imagine two people who start for the same company on the same day straight from Uni.

Person A (we’ll call Alex) negotiates that 7.6% higher starting salary than Person B (Bobbie).

————— Unisex names innit ——————-

Every year they both get a 5% pay rise.

How much longer does Bobbie have to work after Alex retires to earn the same amount of money.

1 1/2 more years.

Alex negotiates a 6% pay rise each year to Bobbie’s 5% – how long then?

You got it – 7 years.

Big difference out the ‘other end’ from a small, incremental change that adds up.

Like many things in life.

Popular culture (films, songs, etc) glamorises the ‘big change’.

The few times in a lifetime moment that changes everything.

And those things, of course, have their place.

But most of what happens to us comes from those little tweaks and refinements.

That not only add up.

But build on each other.

The ‘compound effect’.

It’s rarely sexy.

No one’s making a Hollywood Blockbuster about it.

Sometimes those changes seem barely worth it.

But, like the slightly awkward annual conversation asking for that extra percent pay rise means you get to retire 7 years earlier than your mate……………

They usually are.

Little adjustments to your food.

To your sleep.

To your exercise.

To habits.

To our mindsets.

Little 1% adjustments here and there.

Barely noticeable.

Relatively easy to do.

But add up to massive differences!

Much love,

Jon ‘Lukas Graham’ Hall and Matt ‘Mama Said’ Nicholson
