It doesn’t seem to happen so much now.

But I remember, as a child, people complaining about ‘Health and Safety’ stuff.

“Gone mad” they’d say as a new H&S measure was brought in at work or elsewhere.

“It was like that before and I turned out fine” they’d comment.

Missing the point about the others who had died or been maimed unnecessarily.

As far as I’m aware you don’t get many unnecessary deaths at work nowadays.

Often thanks to the introduction of measures that make certain undesirable behaviours impossible (or at least very difficult).

After years of trying (and failing) to persuade people to use protective measures or, maybe, just to not to stick their fingers in the machine while it was working……….

People realised it’s much more effective to have a guard that needs to be in place for the machine to operate.

Or two separated buttons that need to be held at the same time, ensuring the hands are out of the way.

We’ve talked before about the three different aspects at play when trying to change something.

The Rider (conscious mind), the Elephant (unconscious mind) and the Path (the environment).

About how sometimes changing your behaviour can come from approaches based on appealing to the Rider or directing the cumbersome Elephant.

But sometimes it’s most effective just to make the desired behaviour as easy as possible and the undesired one harder or impossible.

We often underestimate how much our behaviour is affected by our environment.

When appeals to the staff who were putting their fingers in machines didn’t work, making it impossible instantly did.

And it’s the same with your environment.

Rather than relying on willpower to make the choices you know you should.

Make those choices the easy ones.

If you only had healthy food options in your kitchen.

And no cake, biscuits, etc.

How would you be most likely to eat?

Don’t make the Path harder to travail than it has to be.

Don’t purposefully challenge your willpower and restraint.

Make the better options the easier ones.

And vice versa 🙂

Much love,
