💡💡💡

Date line late 90s.

My wife Alex’s Uncle Chris turns up at Alex’s Grandparents (his parents) with a mannequin.

You know, like the ones that have clothes on in a shop.

He’s seen it in a skip.

And brought it back.

For a laugh.

Alex has said several times over the years that “You two would’ve got on great – you have the same ‘sense of humour'”.

Usually while rolling her eyes.

He, sadly, died before we met.

The mannequin is duly named Herbert.

And left sat on a sofa in a side room for a while.

You know – just for giggles.

Shortly after, Alex’s grandparents return home to find the front door open.

A sideboard in the lounge left ajar.

Various things out on the side.

Somebody’s broken in.

But nothing’s been taken.

Seeing that the door to the side room has been left open as well, it seems a second (or more) intruder has gone through to the lounge.

Seen Herbert sat on the sofa.

And, in a split second judgement, thought it to be a real person.

And they’ve legged it.

Funny.

But understandable.

We often make those split second judgements.

Sometimes correctly.

Sometimes, not so much.

It’s part of our ‘reptilian’ side to our brain.

That’s served us well for millions of years.

Allowed us to make snap judgements which have led to our survival and our ability to pass our genes onto a next generation.

Evolving, bit by bit, from single cell amoebas to what you see in the mirror every morning.

But……….

Life’s not what it was in that respect.

Our days aren’t filled with snap decisions that need to be made to keep us alive.

Or not anywhere near as much as they once were.

We can take a little longer over things now.

Choose to not act on impulse.

We don’t need to take hours over a decision.

But we could, maybe, take a count of ten?

At most, 90 seconds.

There is research that suggest that the chemical reaction in the body to an event or thought lasts that minute and a half at most.

Allow that ‘feeling’ to dissipate and we’re playing a different ball game.

We can choose to not inhale that food immediately when offered / seen.

To not react straight away to ‘that comment’ someone makes.

To not reach straight for a drink when we “need to unwind”.

To take a moment.

Not long.

And to not even necessarily make a different decision.

We can still do that thing if we want.

But just to give it long enough for that reactive animal brain to settle.

Allow our more rational human brain a chance.

To calmly decide if that’s what we want to do.

If it is, that’s cool.

If it’s not, then taking that 10 to 90 seconds, might just be the most powerful thing we can do.

Much love,

P.S. Any takers for getting that middle name?
