My middle son is a good little football player.

In his first season up front for his local team last season he scored 55 goals across all competitions and his aiming for 100 this year so that “Man U send a scout out to see me”.

My eldest is also keen on becoming a Man U player when he’s older.

But he doesn’t particularly enjoy playing actual games.

And hasn’t played as part of a team for a couple of years.

He’s skilful on the ball but doesn’t like the pressure of team sports.

While the middle son has the odds stacked against him, he is, at least, doing what needs to be done.

Because the only way to get better at anything is to do it.

All the stuff ‘around’ things has it’s place of course.

But the doing it is key and irreplaceable.

It’s the same with exercise, eating better and meditation.

Theory for all can be useful.

But nothing beats practice.

Everyone starts somewhere between awful and not all that good at these (and everything else).

Practices their way through mediocre, to ok, to alright, to pretty good and so on.

We have to go through that stage where we’re not that good at something to get good (enough) at it.

Out of all the things that benefit people, meditation is by far the least used.

Because we try it once or twice and find we’re rubbish at it.

Get annoyed out ourselves for thinking about not thinking while we feel we should be in a state of zen like peace 10 seconds in.

Exercise can be the same.

Struggle in our first workout for a while and we’re easily put off.

And healthier eating.

Do what we think is right and only lose half a pound and, think “sod it” and jack it in.

But these are all skills.

That we get better at by continuing to do.

Whether our goals are akin to playing for Man U or Macc Town or the local pub team, we just need to keep ‘playing’ (it’s myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting if you need to start ‘playing’ again. For keeps this time).

Much love,

Jon ‘ny Evans’ Hall and Matt ‘Busby’ Nicholson
