Not me – Marlon Brando’s character in ‘The Wild One’.

The classic line that summed up a generations of teenage angst and rebellious attitude.

Mildred: “Hey, Johnny, what are you rebelling against?”

Johnny: “What’ve you got?”

As a species, we’ve always had this rebellious side.

An inbuilt dislike of being controlled or coerced.

If I had a pound for every time I’ve heard someone say some variation of “If you tell me what to do, it makes me want to do the opposite”, then I’d have, I dunno, probably a few hundred pounds at least.

It’s part of what can make people struggle to lose weight.

That feeling that the different way of eating isn’t really what we want to do.

When we say “sod it” or “F it” and go a bit crazy food (or drink) wise, we’re very much rebelling against this “diet” (or however else we’re seeing it).

And we get that.

No one likes to feel controlled or restricted.

But…………..

Is it worth considering that when we make those ‘less good’ food and drink (and exercise) choices………….

We’re potentially restricting ourselves more.

Contributing to a body that doesn’t quite do what we want it to.

That doesn’t provide the energy we’d like.

That can’t ‘take part’ in all the things we might like to do.

That we don’t feel comfortable with in certain situations (beach, social occasions, bedroom, etc).

When we stop seeing eating better as ‘restriction’ and ‘deprivation’……………

When we realise it’s the exact opposite…………..

That it allows us freedom and choice in the things that really matter to us………..

Then it becomes a much easier choice to make.

Much love,
