I heard a quote that stopped me in my tracks the other day.
By a guy called Alex Hormozi.
“You don’t become confident by shouting affirmations in the mirror, but by having a stack of undeniable proof that you are who you say you are.”
Which I loved.
Increased confidence is something that people often struggle with.
Because they’re never really been shown how to become more confident.
They just kind of hope it will happen.
Just by wanting to become more confident.
And, nearly always, it won’t.
The word “confidence” comes the Latin origin confidre.
The same route as the word trust
Confidence comes from a trust in ourselves that we can handle a certain situation or do what we set out to do.
And trust comes from evidence.
Proof that we are who we say we are.
But what won’t work is just telling ourselves that we are something that we just don’t believe we are.
We’ll struggle to find sufficient evidence.
Standing in front of a mirror and telling ourselves “You’re a Tiger – go get em’ Champ” probably isn’t going to work.
Because we don’t really believe it.
Coming up with a self-description of ourselves that we can, at least, see becoming true………
Then collating evidence of that………
It’s how confidence is built.
If we don’t believe that we’re excellent at something………
Do we at least believe that, with sufficient practise, we will become significantly better?
And can we find evidence of when that’s happened in our life?
Probably.
If we don’t believe that we’re an amazing employee, partner, parent, or anything else………
Do we at least believe that we’re “alright” at those things.
And can we collate evidence for that?
Literally sitting down and writing out every single thing we can think of that seems to show that.
Not just “thinking it in our head”.
Sitting down and writing it out.
When we actually do that, the volume of evidence that we can find that supports it……………
Significantly outweighs the volume of evidence that seems to dispute it.
The evidence to the contrary comes to mind pretty quickly,
But we soon run out of steam.
The evidence that supports that belief is a little slower to get going.
But often ends up a much longer list.
But we’ll only ever do that but actually making that list.
Looking in the mirror and shouting affirmations won’t help.
Coming up with a description of yourself that is somewhat higher than the one you normally use, but at the very least you can see signs of becoming true………
And then collating evidence to create undeniable proof that it is true………
And then creating even more evidence going forward…….
Is where your confidence will come from.
Much love ,
