Did it for three years until it became logistically impossible.

 

I don’t really know how I ended up doing this to be honest, but that’s a different story.

 

About a year ago we were invited to do the ‘Guard of Honour’ at Leicester Tigers vs. Exeter Chiefs.

 

When we arrived my Jamie refused to get involved.

 

Which isn’t like him.

 

We were stood outside the door for ages as the other went in and I tried to persuade him to get involved.

 

I started calm, but was getting progressively more annoyed with him.

 

After all, I (and others) had gone to a lot of trouble to make this happen.

 

I started threatening him with going home and not taking him to other sporting events we’d got lined up.

 

Which was, I’m sure you know, never going to be the best approach.

 

As we sat in the stands watching his friends carry the flags out in front of 20,000 people, I finally asked him the right question.

 

“Was there anything you were you worried about?”

 

“I thought I would die” came his response.

 

Turned out he’d had a nightmare the night before in which he died whilst doing the Guard of Honour.

 

Random I know.

 

But that was what was going on in his head.

 

And what I should have done right from the start………

 

Was help him realise his concerns………..

 

And resolve them.

 

To find out what he was thinking, explain the process of what would happen and get him to realise he wasn’t going to die doing it.

 

As a species we’re not very good and fully realising and rationalising our concerns.

 

We have fears that we dress up as something else.

 

Not quite realising the reality..

 

Let alone giving ourselves the opportunity to resolve those concerns.

 

If I had a pound for every that ever joined us having put it off for ages over concerns they’d be “the fattest one there” or “too unfit”……….

 

Then I’d have, well, quite a few pounds.

 

And I’d get quite a few more pounds for everyone that was a member, had missed a week or two for genuine reasons, worried about our reaction when they came back and then realised that there was nothing to worry about when they did return.

 

We don’t try new things in case we ‘fail’ at them.

 

Or worse, are seen to have failed.

 

But we rarely know that’s the reason.

 

We justify things in our own heads and to others in a myriad of ways.

 

We give other reasons – time, money and so on.

 

Sometimes that’s the entirety of the reason.

 

But usually, only part.

 

So, if you’re concerned about coming and checking us out………

 

Or you’re a member, not been down for a while and are worried about coming back…………

 

Then you don’t need to be.

 

Every single person who’s started or come back has found that there was no need to be concerned.

 

They were able to do the appropriate version for them.

 

And / or realised that we were there to help and weren’t going to make them feel bad.

 

Don’t do the equivalent of ‘missing the Guard of Honour’ because you’re worried you’ll die.
